Games on a Budget!

In my games on a budget series I will describe to you cheap, older games that are tons of fun for not a ton of cash. The first game I’m gonna cover in this series is truly one of my favorite games of all time.

Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
The story of this little ditty is loosely based on the ill-fated Ang Lee hulk movie from a few years back. By loosely based, I mean really loosely based. But who cares about the plot, right? The main appeal of playing the Hulk is smashing things.
Hulk gets a huge number of unlockable abilities, which are acquired through the cleverly crafted upgrade system where you gain points for every single thing you smash. As Hulk’s power grows, so do your options for fun. You can do everything from running up buildings to hang gliding using gorilla balloons to flattening out busses into skateboards and skating around town. You can throw giant hamburgers at enemies, spin tanks around ala Mario vs. Bowser in Mario 64, you can piledrive robots off of skyscrapers and, best of all, you can punch cows.
The missions for the game are surprisingly fun. They’re not all amazing, but they’re interesting enough to keep you going, and a few are genuine gems. For example, in one mission you have to steal a cargo jeep, and smash yourself inside of it and sneak inside an army building pretending to be a regular jeep. The idea that no one sees your little Hulk feeties sticking out from under the thing is just hysterical to me.
Not really into completing all the story missions? Don’t worry about it, I myself have spent upwards of fifty hours screwing around in the game and I’ve never felt the need to beat it. You can have all of Hulk’s abilities with only about 70% of the story missions completed. Speaking of missions, there’s an entire smorgasbord of strange side missions with varied and often hilarious mission objectives. You have side missions where you have to catch a certain number of missiles and throw them back at your attackers, and you have missions where you have to punt SUVs through goalposts.
All in all, it is all good. Seriously, I can’t recommend this game strongly enough. I have spent countless hours blowing off steam by playing this game, because let me tell you, few things are as satisfying as leveling a city block with the power of your fists.

Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is a great game, available for the gamecube, X-box, and Playstation 2 for super cheap. There are a few listed on Amazon.com at the time of this article that are available for approximately $5.

So do yourself a favor and pick up this cheap on cost, rich on fun game.

On a side note – Do not pick up the Hulk game based on the recent Edward Norton flick, available for the current gen systems. This other Hulk game is a soulless clone of the original. It’s like a zombie of Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Yeah it looks kinda like it did when it was alive, but it doesn’t really move like the original and it sure as hell doesn’t act like it. This new Hulk game is horrible. Save your time and money and have more fun playing the original.
